Open Quantum Challenge: Solve Quantum Problems With a GPU and No Quantum Computer
aiquantumopensourcemachinelearning
TL;DR
The Open Quantum Challenge is now open on Hugging Face, with both seasons launching together today. You solve real quantum-computing problems using only a GPU and a public harness, with no quantum computer required. Season 1 is quantum simulation and Season 2 is QEC decoding, both open from day one, and the total prize pool is 2,000 USD. You can join by copying the guide into Codex or Claude Code.

What is the Open Quantum Challenge?
It is an open competition to solve quantum problems on classical hardware. Quantum computers are scarce and hard to access, so the challenge reframes the problem: given a GPU and an open evaluation harness, how well can you simulate and correct quantum systems in software? Everything you need to compete is public.
The two seasons
| Season | Task | What you build |
|---|---|---|
| Season 1 | Quantum simulation | Simulate quantum systems accurately on a GPU |
| Season 2 | QEC decoder | Build a decoder for quantum error correction |
Why it matters
Quantum error correction and simulation are two of the hardest and most important problems on the road to useful quantum computing, and both can be attacked in software today. Opening them to anyone with a GPU turns a hardware-gated field into something a much larger community can contribute to.
How to join
- Open the challenge Space: https://huggingface.co/spaces/FINAL-Bench/open-quantum-challenge
- Copy the guide from the page.
- Paste it into Codex or Claude Code and let it set up your entry.
- Run against the public harness and submit.
That is the whole on-ramp. No quantum hardware, no special cluster.
FAQ
Do I need a quantum computer? No. You only need a GPU and the public harness provided by the challenge.
What are the two seasons? Season 1 is quantum simulation, Season 2 is a QEC decoder.
What is the prize? A total of 2,000 USD across the challenge.
How do I enter? Copy the guide from the challenge Space and paste it into Codex or Claude Code, then submit against the public harness.
